Good ears! The valve timing is definitely in need of attention. Back when the drive axle was installed backwards (this meant that the eccentrics on this axle were also reversed), efforts were made to fix the resulting sluggish performance by adjusting the valve timing. The flipped axle problem was corrected, but the valves were not put back to the correct timing. It's on our maintenance list. That will correct the 3-1 cadence.

I operated this engine (engineer/fireman) for two summers at Lake Tahoe. 1971/2 Keller's Scenic Railways concession.

I've been told that, just after its major restoration in the 60's, that this engine was quite sluggish and not considered a good runner. Apparently, during restoration, it was not reassembled correctly, putting it badly out of time. Was that your experience? The assembly problems were since corrected.

I operated after the new boiler/rebuild of the early 70's and was not aware of any prior problems. The engine was responsive and robust. 40mph easy with a couple cars, although we rarely ran it flat out., since the air compressor was shot and there were no brakes. To stop (simplified) Reverse the bar, tap on the throttle - drop some sand in an emergency. Glad we never had one.

We recently spent ~$7000 to have the air compressor rebuilt. When disassembled we noted internal valve parts were worn, bent, broken and brazed to repair (namely the reversing rod). We used the same alternate method to stop when the lubricator acted up one day. Perfectly acceptable method when running light.
