"Private MIlitary Companies" or PMCs are on occasions referred to as "Military Firms and are typically similar to those of governmental military or police forces, most often on a smaller scale.

Private Security Companies" (contractors, firms) or PSCs are on many ocassions contracted to render tasks in conflict and post-conflict environments

To get an understanding from the Merc/Contractor point of view, a worthwhile read is "Highway to Hell" by John Geddes. It's good if you want to understand the sort of men (and Women) who go into this line of work, why, and he even gives you an insight into what made the situation in Iraq possible, and its roots are from even before Americans/Westerners even got involved. If you want something without Media bias (left or right-wing), this is worth a look.
