Romanian born Professor and Concert violinist Sherban Lupu had a freak accident on December 15, 2007 an hour before his second performance of the Berg Violin concerto with the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra. Just 30 feet from the artists' entrance to the Atheneum Concert Hall, snow hid a rather thick electrical line which had no right being there in the first place. There were no caution signs and in the act of saving his with his 18th Century Gagliano, Maestro Lupu broke his shoulder in 4 different places. Suffice it to say, he could not perform.

  • This violinist gets my approval for saving his violin before his life.

  • Unfortunately for Professor Lupu, he has not played since the accident.

  • beautiful language!

  • it is romansh

  • for it being a 18th Century Gagliano should they have like some sort of protective case?

  • thank god his gagliano made it through safe!

  • what happened there?

  • in the comment says "romanian professor"

  • How awful! I met Prof. Lupu in Bucharest in 2005 in connection with some research I was conducting on Enescu. He was a perfect gentleman and gave me a great deal of help.

His recording of the Enescu "Caprice Roumaine" is a monument not only of violin playing but also of scholarship, since he was intimately involved in reconstructing the violin part from nearly unusable manuscripts. His recording of the Enescu violin sonatas with V. Gheorghiu is also truly great.

    May he soon recover!

  • What a language is that? It isn´t Russian (because of the Latin letters...)

    Is it Romanian??!

    I´m interesting in that! :-)

  • HOLY CRAP! PROF> LUPU IS MY VIOLIN TEACHER"S TEACHER! HOLY CRAP! she told me about this. i can't belive it....wow. sad though. but it would have been worse if the violin was destroyed.
