This series will answer the age old question - windows or unix? Afraid to switch to unix? Let me be your guinea pig! Already have unix? I'm thinking Ubuntu - what do you think? In round one, I haven't switched yet...just complaining about windoze a whole lot.

  • ubuntu is linux not unix ...right?

  • That is not exactly correct. Linux is Unix-like operating system - meaning it behaves like Unix most of the time - and is INSPIRED by Minix, educational mini Unix; it did not actually use any of its code. Therefore, Linux represents a free, yet independent implementation of the Unix concept. Ubuntu is just one of the distributions of Linux, distribution being a version of the system that a company or individual makes in order to offer a complete OS with an assortment of programs and utilities.

  • Another GNU/Linux user here!

  • Lastly, GNU is not UNIX.

GNU is an acronym for GNU's Not Unix (this is called a recursive acronym).

  • Also, GNU/Linux is a UNIX work-alike. There are others besides it. There is BSD (FreeBSD , openBSD, and netBSD are flavors of BSD) and it fills the same role as GNU/Linux, Windows OSes on the Windows NT kernel (NT is what powers 2000, XP, Vista, and 7) and Mac OS X.

  • Ubuntu is a distribution of GNU/Linux.

GNU is the operating system; Linux is the kernel. In other words, what you often call Linux is actually GNU. Linux is a small part of Ubuntu, whereas GNU is a huge part of it.

  • ubuntu is linux

  • @littlemattjk Linux is UNIX even if it doesn't come directly from AT&T UNIX. Remember that UNIX isn't just an OS, but a philosophy. As for the official name, people call BSD and Linux UNIX-like because The Open Group has the UNIX trademark and the Open Source community doesn't want to pay for UNIX Specifications (Neither do I ;D).

  • Wow, i didn't think that this would be **that** fucking awful, though i should've assumed so the moment that i saw "Windoze" vs UNIX written on note paper with a permanent marker.

  • I look for windows v unix and this is what I find? Some persons scribbles on a pad? I think I'll stick with windows

  • @kawless no its not the hardwares fault all the time. its the OS's fault hence the 64bit mouse issues with windows 7

  • @feebdaed HAHAHAHA
