Larry Coryell & David Hidalgo perform "Slow Blues".
This performance, taken from the Retrospective film, features David Hidalgo of Los Lobos as a guest guitarist.

Larry Coryell had been a fan of David's playing after hearing him play on a recorded blues type performance, and specifically asked for David to be a part of this show.

While preparing for this show at his home in Orlando, I had asked Coryell about the original recording of "Slow Blues", which can be heard on the release "Basics" from 1976 (a collection of outtakes from '68 and '69 sessions).

Coryell had mentioned the reason for recording Slow Blues back in 1969 was to show that although Hendrix, Page, and Clapton were playing electrified blues, this was something he could do as well. If you have the opportunity to hear this early recording of Slow Blues, you will find that not only could Coryell play a blues just as well, if not better than anybody, it his style at which he plays that sets him apart from the rest.

Although the early recording had no vocals, Coryell added vocals to this 2005 version with improvising lyrics on the spot. He had run this idea by me before heading to the stage, and we decided to step outside the box and try something a little different than the original tune.

  • Larry borrowed my crappy 70's Twim Reverb; the Master Volume era, but he recorded the show as payment. You all know, very few jazz, fusion jazz, Eric Johnson, Joe Satch players can play real blues like Larry.. He is soo good. Chedck out The Lion and The Lamb with Julie Coryell. It is a great solo LP with him playing all guitar, mainly acoustic and overdubbed stuff But soo cool, Also the Ezsential Larry Coryell on Vanguard Recs. GET THAT ONE IF you can find it. Totally great and rarde. DC

  • A solid gold Jazz great but not a blues player.

  • Larry Coryell is a fine jazz player....but he just doesnt have the blues

  • COOL !!!

  • people who bag the blues just don't get it and for you who like me fucking Stevie ray Vaughn love it, you know what i mean ha ha .and 4 the record never heard of this guy but like his shit in fact i am off to get out my strat and rip the top off a brew

  • Just dripping with emotions that reach out to those who feel it too. Thanx for sharing this and I did not know Larry C shared the stage with David H. Very Kool :)

  • i really dig this, but he sings like quinn sullivan

  • J'ai fait la vanne "Larry Covert" à mon père, il m'a engueulé. Il a bien fait.

  • This is the best concert I have seen in three year's, just but watching the video. Was so very there.

  • The camera work and editing is absolutely retarded on this and ruins an incredible performance. Do we get to see the artists with medium close ups to see what they're doing? No. We get a bunch of tight close ups of a hi hat or weird angle on Coryell where you can't see his left hand just because someone behind the camera wants to be an "artiste."
