Thomas Eakins has been been called the greatest American painter; his portraits are full of intellect and emotion - not unlike the majesty of Rembrandt. A superb draftsman. There is truth and realism and a robust masculinity in his paintings, but it cannot be overlooked there is also homoeroticism - especially in "Swimming" as well as the pictures of rowers and boxers. Finally Eakins has earned the position as one of Philadelphia's most beloved sons.

One of the greatest paintings of all time. Great color of the blood and flesh contrasted against the dark clothing and hair of the doctors.

Great review of a favorite painting! Thanks for pulling out some thought provoking nuggets relating to it's composition. I think this discussion will advance my own work in the future.
