  • Agreed. Making contacts with a low power QRP transmitter is challenging and not for beginners. The receiver can be used by beginners for W1AW code practice though.

  • With a good improvised antenna, I would take this with me on any trip into the boonies. My interests, Now as they were 35 years ago are still with the QRP type radios in the milliwatt range. I was never in the market for any high priced kits or radios, no matter what the pulp hacks wrote about them. Kids today are interested in this part of the hobby most. Not the 2m or 10m, Not repeater operation, But micro-power radios. Strike while the iron is hot or lose them for 35 years. Simple.

  • I loved the video, but I'm of the mind that a beginner should get their feet wet with a low power unit. Using excellent kits like these can teach many skills. The beginner needs to be well grounded in the basics and not on some equipment he may never be able to afford or purchase. I look forward to purchasing and building as many of these kits as I can spare the change for. And I have waited for 35 years for such an opportunity to arrive. I'm finally going for my ticket after all these years.

  • Jeff - well done on a comprehensive and well-produced video. Many only show operating and not setting up so you fill a gap here.

However I'd be wary about promoting this type of gear to beginners. 200mW crystal control means frustration, fruitless calls and not being able to operate if the freq is busy.

QRP teaches what's really needed & what's not. Eg you don't need sidetone or QSK. But freq agility & >2w out make the difference between fun and failure & novices should be told this.
