I'm not Mr Mondino but I was his editor and I cut this promo in Paris in December 1984. Yes, holo, you're right. This is CGI, and no, it didn't cost anything. It offered by some fx company, I totally forgot the name of. And the release of of this was 84, the promo was produced by Island Paris.

Sorry, the exact broadcasting date for this vid is 1984, until the summer! For example, here is the date one of the first appearance of this video in a musical tv show called "PLATINE 45", it was in 1984, in january 25th, and Jean-Baptiste Mondino was the special guest of this day called for the show "Special Dance" with Jacky the tv presenter...

The first J-B Mondino's vid is "Rendez-vous au paradis", a good french summer hit broadcasted in all radio station, sung by the french singer and composer Alain Chamfort in summer '81. "La danse des mots" knew a huge broadcasting on french tv, during the summer 1983. It's not possible that his first vid was before 1980. Because the arrival of the videos in France began exactly in 1981 and took a huge success in 1983-84 with the TV shows like "Les enfants du rock", "22, Boulevard des clips"...

i saw this on Night Flight on USA network back in the 80's. Man, has it been that long?

It's a masterpiece and great to see again. Some obscure Long Island UHF station running rock videos 24/7 in the mid-80s showed this one often. The cost of those few seconds of computer animation showing a cube flying apart into pieces would have paid for hundreds of these videos in the 1970s. I'll cast my vote to the 1980s as its origin.

I'm sorry but there is is absolutly no computer animation in that clip : anything is naturally hand made by pixillation : images are taken 2 by 2 like in a real camera mode, this is not real direct continuous filming, and everything seen on the video is real objects hand made, not computer generated : this is real arts here ! And you are confusing 2 things : the date of creation in France is 1978 ! But there is a second date of American release of the same LP in America : 1982 ! Sorry, guys.

This video is not from 1978, in fact it's so 80's!I saw it for the first time on French tv at the earliest in late 1983, early 1984, and I watched a lot of tv back then!Anyway, everything about the video(the fashions, the smurfing, the 80's style rapping, the sound of the song, etc.) are dead giveaways that this is circa 1982-84.There's not even a hint of the 70's in it.

Mondino released his first commercial video in 1981.
And only after that, the media started knowing him, and they diffused his very first video, but after 1981.
That's why the public ever reminds about it near 1983 (falsly)...
But his first video is really before 1980, that is for sure !
