it's not true that the acting in silent movies was always over-the-top and silly. When the director was a good director and the actors where good actors that's not happened. Try to see Victor Sjostroem's The Wind or a film directed by John Ford and you will see it.

The director managed to coax very naturalistic performances from the three child actors. The story is very touching, and the cinematography is lovely. In most scenes, the film has been painted with a sheer wash of color--night scenes are blue, pastoral scenes are green, and so on. I can't recommend it enough.
