@vincenz55 I expect you are American and with antiquated ideas. Josephine adopted France because her home country treated her as a second class citizen. She suffered appalling racism in The States, but was appreciated in France. As for Sugar Daddies - if you're referring to Pepito, he made a lot of money out of her, not the other way round. She fought against injustice all her life as well as being a brilliant entertainer. What a wonderful woman.

@dagan8er So that said, I think the only people that Baker can be "compared" to are those who she likely influenced or set the stage for, Berry being a prime candidate. I would rather compare her to Beyonce or something, myself, because the medium is closer, including the dance influence and quirky facial expressions. Tyra Banks would also be a better comparison. None of them, IMO, have the level of vision that Baker did -- but again, Baker can only happen once.
You know I just got it. Everyone is copying josephine baker today. Beyonce with her Deja vu dance and booty shake. Toni braxton copyed her hair. Heck, even Angelina Jolie copyed the whole adoption of children from different races thing that seems so hip in hollywood these days. Nothing new under the sun. I wish that she got more credit for what she did to showcase the beauty of black women in a time when Americans could not get pass there own issues.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for Ms. Baker. She left the U.S. at age 19 and moved to France (in the 20s!), learned the french language, became an international star, bought a Chateau, adopted 12 children of varying ethnicities, became a spy for the french government to help with their cause for freedom, and she marched alongside Dr. King at the march on Washington. I'm an african american woman and her skin tone doesn't bother me. Darn it. I should have kept up my spanish.
