from his 1991 album Girlfriend

Do just what you want to
I think you're right
I do what I want to to
I do what I want to to
I let the world surround me
'Cause I saw no real harm
I didn't stop to think of you
You were already in my arms
I was wrong but I

I wanted to tell you
I wanted to tell you
What I couldn't say [love]
I needed to find mine
But it took me a long time to see

Love... well never mind
I know how you feel about that
Now what do you think
About time? [something...]

I wanted to tell you
I wanted to tell you
What I couldn't say [love]
I needed to find mine
But it took me a long time to see

I do what I want to to
I do what I want to to
I do what I want to to
I do what I want to to
I let the world surround me
'Cause I saw no real harm
I didn't stop to think of you
You were already in my arms
But there was something...

I wanted to tell you
I wanted to tell you
What I couldn't say [love]
I needed to find mine
But it took me a long time to see

Love...

  • @talleywho real fine overview

  • @1000tapper It is my understanding that Sweet wrote this album during the phase of his life when his marriage was failing and he and his wife divorced. If you listen to the album as a whole you can hear his songs are of infatuation, love, romanticizing, fantasizing, hate, disrepair and regret. It is a dying art and a rare thing to find an artist who can craft a "complete" album that tells a story which is conveyed from song to song throughout the albums entirety.

  • Robert Quine, Richard Lloyd, Fred Maher, Lloyd Cole, Greg Leisz, Ric Menck... all GREAT contributors to a classic, but the real beauty of Matthew's songs is that you can play them with just an acoustic guitar & they are still GREAT songs! ;)

  • I was working at Tower Records in Annapolis Maryland. (sad to say it's no longer there) when this CD came out?till this date I have never heard of album such as Girlfriend. Fact is I never will. 100% fun was killer too. But Girlfriend was a masterpiece. I also love where the needle is picked up and the record wa flipped over and the needle started side 2. It's a shame I lost track of Sweet. Then I saw him in Ming Tea. I got some ground to catch up with.

  • I love this song, but can someone tell me what it means?

  • @MentalTeleprosy The liner notes says it is, and that it was a pic from the late 1950's. Dunno about the re-release of Girlfriend, but the original release had another pic of her from the same movie(?) in black & white and without the coat.

  • Rip the audio from this tune at thetunify doht cohm.

  • Is that Tuesday Weld? Is that Matthew Sweet? is that a cool lick and a great drum beat? It all flows together now. Perfect.

  • i just love the way the chorus and BGV's hit in this one!

".....But there was something.......i wanted to tell you...i wanted to tell you...what i couldn't say..........(LOVE).....i needed to find mine.......but it took me a long time...to see......."
