Imagi Animation Studios will be screening this computer animated 3-D feature film in theatres on October 23, 2009. The story is set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy (voiced by Freddie Highmore) is about a young robot with incredible powers created by brilliant scientist - Dr. Tenma - (voiced by Nicolas Cage) in the image of the son he has lost. Not able to fulfill the grieving man's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him. Created by Osamu Tezuka, the character was introduced in the 1951 Captain Atom manga. In 1962, MBS released a live action movie and it's television program first broadcasted in Japan in 1963. (The title "Mighty Atom" for an atomic powered robot, as "Astro Boy" was thought of back then, was considered too generic and not "catchy enough" a title for a children's program for American TV.) Astro Boy was remade in the 1980's as Shin Tetsuwan Atomu, known as Astroboy in the United States and other Western countries, and again in 2003. A feature film was announced in 1999 by Columbia Pictures and Jim Henson production but that was it. There were plans for a Japanese-Canadian IMAX coproduction, but it was shelved in 2000 while it was early in production. A Japanese IMAX featurette was made in 2005, based on the 20032004 anime, titled "Astro Boy/TetsuWan Atomu--Visits the Person, IGZA--100,000 Light Years Away!", but has only been shown in Japan. Astro was listed on Empire magazine's 50 Greatest Comic Characters list ranking forty third on the list. The 1960's anime was named the 86th best animated series by IGN, calling it the first popular anime TV series. Additional notable cast features Samuel L. Jackson playing as Zog, Kristen Bell will play as Cora, and Charlize Theron will be the Narrator!
