Mikoshi on Parade: In Japan, mikoshi (sacred palanquin — Chariot of the Gods!) are portable Shinto shrines carried on the shoulders of large groups of strong young men. Mikoshi are normally stored at the local shrines; during matsuri (festivals), the mikoshi are paraded through the streets in order to transport the kami (Shinto gods/spirits) around the neighborhood. Mikoshi can weigh as much as about three quarters of a ton (700 kg), and need careful teamwork for stability.
