my host file has nothing in it related to apple. The closest thing I can find is
127.0.0.1 localhost
Do I have to add apple as a host or something?

@sonicmikmakdx Make sure you are updating to iOS 5.0.1, not 5.0. And try wiping out anything in your hosts file that looks like "127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com"..wipe out anything with numbers following "gs.apple.com" and try restoring.

@KrissyAndCo Try changing the name to "hosts.txt". This will allow you to save it. Then, drag it to your desktop, rename it back to hosts, and then drag it back into the place it first was.

@PLAYSTATION4EVA Try adding #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com to the end of your hosts file.
