Sounds like you have a Macbook, you can hook up an external monitor to it and have a dual monitor setup like mine where one monitor is the laptop's screen and the other is your external monitor.

Get a new monitor if you want one. If your editing 1080p HD video it would be nice to have a 24" or 30" display so you can see the full resolution of the video.
