Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Review

If big optical zooms, top-notch image stabilization and advanced manual controls light your fixed-lens digital camera fire, then the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS ($429.99 MSRP) is the ultimate kindling. It's got an obscene 35x optical zoom 24mm wide-angle lens paired with Canon's stellar optical image stabilization and a new Intelligent IS mode. The PowerShot SX40 HS also received a new 12.2-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor with the latest Digic 5 processing for higher noise reduction and faster speeds, enabling the SX40 HS to capture up to 8fps in Burst mode at full resolution. Canon also boosted the camera's video ability to 1080p Full HS at 24fps and the Smart Auto mode has been expanded to reference up to 32 scenes. While most of the PowerShot SX40 HS's renovations have transpired inside the camera, its external design remains untouched for 2011. http://tchno.be/tEYV2A

  • Mike, I just got mine recently, and I could have sworn I saw a histogram somewhere in one of the modes!

  • i have this camera ita a really good camera, if your looking for a good affordable camera ya should get this, its $399.

  • @Nuker1337 Yes, I read quite a while ago that too many Megapixels can be a problem- something about more visual noise as a result of smaller pixels not allowing as much light in, or something like that- I'm not so sure, so it's better to do some research. I do know that a good photographer can actually get great, sharp pictures from a 6 MP camera, and blow them up to 8X11 or larger.

  • @JoeSzilagy Yeah, it looks good to uneducated people, but it really sucks for image quality and especially low light performance. Stepping down from 14 to 12 mp was one of the best changes from the SX30 to the SX40.

  • How long is the battery life?

  • @Nuker1337 p.s. I just looked at Nikon's site in Japan, and they're releasing a 36.3 MP DSLR on the same date- March 22nd. What the hell??!! Good for billboards I suppose!
