20,000 people from 177 countries attended the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in North Korea in 1989. Heres the bit where we walked to the stadium for the opening ceremony...

  • OMFG Thank u so much for posting this vid...Im in tears as I write this as I am the one holding the Australian Aboriginal flag in the video. My late mothers house burnt down and I lost all my memorabilia from this event. All I have is one strip of negatives left. My name is Ben Williams and I was in the YSL

  • hey Ben, i remember you from the festival -actually I have some footage of you playing the didjeridoo (just 10sec or so) at the Aus delegates concert - I'll put it up ASAP. BTW glad to restore some memorabilia from that fantastic experience for you!

  • is this like an olympic games for kids or something? and why is it only held in communist countries?

    and why is everybody invited?

  • Its more an international conference/festival for socialists, so it's only held in socialist countries (but is open to/appeals to any group of similar political leaning, regardless of the political climate in their own country)

  • Like 2011, 1989 is the year of the revolution! People protest against the Communist regimes. All are successful expect Tiananmen Square mass protests. China's gov't cracked down the protests!

  • @sotndwoddl4512 Never! Capitalist shall not put their hands on North Korea. Just China allowed :P DPRK FTW!

  • South Korea hosted 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Will South Korea host 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang

  • @thelonelyspanishboy I was a member of the US delegation; I can answer questions you might have. There was a Spanish delegation but I didn't personally have any interaction with them (there were MANY people there from all over the world). It was one of the best times to visit North Korea because the sheer number of foreigners meant that the security people couldn't keep a tight watch on everyone; we could take the subway and walk around town.

  • How lovely to see this, I was there (and is still in shock), with the Swedish delegation!

  • I would have given anything to have attended. I know many socialist states, patrons, are gone, we still have the entire globe (esp. friendly progressive countries) in which to grow the Festival tradition and make it stronger, even amidst imperialist/capitalist encirclement. It makes festivals like these all the more necessary.

  • @Hmsheen10

no, i didn't, but it would not surprise me since they are pulling off pretty much the opposite of what is marx' idea. could you name a source for that? i would really like to know more about this fact. thank you very much!

  • aahhh Socialistic dictatorship. The only place where the government kills people in the most inhumane way such as sticking a shovel up a girls vagina and still be able to not call it murder. You got to love that country my friends!!!

  • @dblair17 OMG you are so lucky to have gone through this experience
