  • Anybody know what the history of this recording is? Is it from the drunken session where they recorded their track for "I'm Your Fan"?

  • Yeah, I think they basically just cut this down and pasted different pieces together to get the disjointed sound of the track that appeared on that compilation.

REM and the Pixies do a couple pretty solid covers for that album, as well.

I don't know about the band actually being drunk, or whether they were just making an effort to sound loose, though.

  • The being drunk is from Nick Cave himself. Don't have a copy anymore but read an interview where, if I remember correctly, he says they picked an unlikely Cohen song for them to cover, got piss drunk, and the rest, as they say, is history...

Agreed about the REM and Pixies covers, both are outstanding.

  • Interesting. The info's appreciated. Thanks!

  • From what I read they jammed for a long long long time in so it resulted into many different cover versions in one.

And they were all pretty much drunk :)

Cave's Elvis voice is funny..and even Blixa sings a bit.

  • I've heard a better cover of Cave doing this where he isn't drunk and says, I can hearing Lenny Cohen coughing all night long. He does burp and stuff, but it isn't as bad as this.

  • I read that they spontaneously did that really long and half-remembered rendition (after a long drinking session in a nearby pub). Then, after cutting it to an appropriate lenght, they decided that it have some charm and gave it to the 'I'm Your Fan' compilers.

As Mick said 'The spirit in which it was done should be fairly obvious. "Tower of Song" is a totally hilarious piece of writing. The music is so absurd'

But Cohen liked it and said something about 'really inteligent approach' haha.
