However, yeah, according to Environment Canada, St. John's does have about twice as many days with fog than Gander.

Had this only been a local regional airport, I would hold nothing against St. John's expanding.

Not like Gander handles all Incoming and outgoing flight traffic from North America, & we don't have an airport built in the foggiest place in the country and we're by far bigger than St. John's. Don't forget the military flights, cargo flights, refuelling stops and that most international Flying diplomats and presidents land in Gander rather than St. Johns.

Only difference is that Gander is built around the airport/base and we're attached to it. St. John's airport is there for the formality.
