What you see here is a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI that some brainiac decided to install a Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) system into. Yes, that's right folks... run your car on used french fry oil just like you've seen on Mythbusters!!

Well, it's not quite that happy cheery. See, this engine has completely lost compression on one cylinder, and the other three cylinders have very low compression. The entire inside of the engine is sludged with polymerized oil and WVO. There is so much blowby that it looks like a smokestack erupting when you remove the oil cap with the engine running.

This engine has 97,000 miles... 47,000 of those were on WVO. It needs to be completely replaced. There are no salvageable parts. Estimated repair costs: $10,000. I hope the owner saved enough money running his "free fuel" to afford the bill. As it turns out, the owner decided that he can't afford the repairs and is going to pick the car up from the shop. Who knows what he'll do with it... it's virtually undriveable in its current condition.

And this, folks, is how we reduce a vehicle valued at over $25,000 new to scrap value in under 100,000 miles! Remember kids, don't try this at home!

Sorry for the short video and the poor audio. We'll attempt to get a video with a real digital camera instead of a cell phone before the owner picks it up.

If you really think that a WVO system is the right thing for you, please do your research and make an informed decision. Information can be found on http://www.greasecar.com and http://www.tdiclub.com in the forum sections. Improper installation, fuel preparation, and operation WILL cause catastrophic engine failure.

  • I have been running on WVO for 3 years; my father-in-law has been for over ten years. Hundreds of thousands of miles have been logged on WVO without engine failure (270K on his E300). Taking the time for proper care and management are imperative to successful WVO use. If you don't take the time, you must have the money.

  • I ran WVO in my 1981 240D for 1 month (maybe 20 gallons or so). Once I realized how much a pain in the balls collecting, filtering, and spilling oil was, I switched to diesel fuel only. When I changed my glowplugs last, they were sorta gummed in there by polymerized WVO, which made for a difficult change. I could only imagine the buildup after running WVO for an extended amount of time.

No matter what fuel you run though, I recommend doing a Diesel Purge (per the instructions).

  • Hmm really not a good idea wow. WVO is just too crude for that car's engine dont you think?

I have a 2002 Jetta TDi and 2006 Touran TDi and would NEVER even consider going WVO.

Having said that....they run very nicely on B100 biodiesel and VW even honoured the service plan on the Touran knowing this. I have had both of them at VW and Bosch....(Jetta popped a pumphead seal...ULSD, eish.) They agree that after 25 K miles on Jetta and 12K miles on Touran we dont need to start shopping yet

    Cheers

  • Insane, thanks for the vid

  • injectors just need to be cleaned

  • Classic VO destruction of a perfectly good car. I can't begin to imagine what that repair bill is going to look like :(

  • Sounds exactly like my in-laws toilet!
