Extreme Engineering: Building Hong Kong's Airport

Part 1/5

For decades, Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport served millions of travelers who made this cosmopolitan Asian city their destination of choice. But Kai Tak, situated in the heart of town, quickly outgrew its original mission, and it became clear a new airport needed to be built. Join Hong Kong's engineers and architects as they design a travel hub located 16 miles out to sea, requiring a massive land reclamation and the restructuring of two islands.

Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場), because it was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok by land reclamation, and also to distinguish it from the old Hong Kong Airport (Kai Tak).

The airport opened for commercial operations in 1998, replacing Kai Tak Airport, and is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in China, East Asia and Southeast Asia. Despite a relatively short history, Hong Kong International Airport has won several notable international "Best Airport" awards. In 2001-2005 and 2007 - 2008, it came first in Skytrax's World Airport Awards, and second in 2006.

  • @raran44 This actually was at the time and it cost USD$20 billion at the time. Usually when Hong Kongers say it, they are telling the truth whereas when my countrymen (India) say it, they usually are lying because it is sort of nationalist propaganda where they get really happy if anything is done properly in the country.

  • @wilsonshinkansen and you are a motherfucker

  • @wilsonshinkansen u do realize, it became UK territory, because of the opium war.. that the UK started, first by giving the chinese opium, for silk and so forth.. making millions addicts.. for economic wealth.. and then the UK goes and sends a fleet and attacks the chinese, because the emperor, decided opium wasnt healthy for the country.. so yes it is a great country, soaked in greed, guilt, and blood.. but anyway, that was a 100 years ago or more.. let it be forgotten..

  • The China Airlines overshoot incident didn't kill anyone...there were no fatalities, just injuries

  • I am proud to be a King Konger!

  • i love how all the episodes of extreme engineering claim the featured project is the "biggest engineering project in history". Well, which is it?

  • @fourzones

If Hong Kong is shit, than Shanghai is double of shit, bye kid.

  • @wilsonshinkansen no, hong kong is shit, and improve your grammar please, your other posts in the shanghai disney section are grammatically incorrect to say the least.
