Over the last few decades in many Caribbean communities, new generations of children have not been taught or exposed to their native Creole and indigenous languages. This was revealed at the recent regional research conference on "Child Rearing Practices in the Caribbean 2: Early Learning" held June 2008 in St. Kitts-Nevis.
In this short clip, Dr. Rose Davies of the University of the West Indies (UWI) summarises a presentation entitled "Language Transmission, Language Death and the Caribbean Child", made by Prof. Hubert Devonish, Linguistic Researcher in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at UWI, Mona Campus.
The Conference was hosted by the Caribbean Child Support Initiative (CCSI), a programme of the Caribbean Centre for Development Administration (CARICAD) and supported by the Bernard van Leer Foundation.
