In Universe: Adama felt that the fleet was better off with the Pegasus as protection and that the Galactica was more expendable for an obvious one way mission. Apollo had to be a angsty dumbass and come to the rescue, leaving his fighter compliment behind to protect the fleet and without that protection there was no way the Pegasus would be able to escape

The missing frame is where it appears that they tried to kamikaze Pegasus with fighters. Too late.
