In 1988, Evelyn "Champagne" King scored her final career Top 10 R&B hit with "Hold On To What You've Got", from the Flirt LP. The song's tango-ish/house music/Disco sound was a bit new from everything else that played on Urban radio at the time, influencing more artists and producers (such as C&C Music Factory) to further experiment with the sound. Even Madonna's "Vogue" is fairly reminiscent of the tune's arrangement, as well as its video. This record no doubt displayed King's versitility in music. The song was also a Top 10 hit on the Dance Charts and received massive club play. Enjoy this classic record and video.

  • FIERCE FIERCE FIERCE! WERQ! This is a classic moment in the influence of the black gay underground (voguing, fashion, house music) on mainstream pop and r&b, and yes Evelyn influenced many musical chanteuses!

  • I had a feeling that this was a classic hit that influenced that community, because I could here it in the music. It's a shame how many people don't even acknowledge this record anymore. I don't even here it played!

  • THIS WAS THE GREATEST HIT IN 1987 AND WAS NUMBER I ON THE CHATS WOW BUT NOW IS A RARE GROOVE HOUSE MUSIC

  • man i have been looking for this song for over a decade, had no idea the godess made this just shows how f-up today's radio play is. the only time i can hear this is by watching a old eps of soul train. a great club beat + a great voice = magic.

  • This cut is a SUPREME example of sophisticated r&b dance music from the '80s. It's one of my favorite Evelyn 'Champagne' King songs. And I'm sorry, fruityblack, I disagree with your comment about the video being stupid. The runway concept actually accentuates the song with attitude and good ol' fashioned FIERCEness! It's about the mood that the song conveys, not just about the artist that sings it.

  • My Girl!!!!

  • I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED this track!!!

Fruityblack: Nothin´wrong with video, u just need 2 understand the reasoning 4 additional dancers in music videos & concept therein, that´s all.

Sierra64: In 80´s, music wasn´t´bout competing with so & so but, more about doing something artists enjoyed, doing it right in terms of REAL music...If competition was a priority in those times, they´d´ve sounded all the same like today´s pop music. I know how 2 appreciate good music!
