Enlightenment does not exist, because once we strive for it it becomes a desire and therefore loses all substance, becoming meaningless. Buddha understood that under the bodhi tree. He went there to achieve enlightenment, realized the paradox of it and in doing so he achieved it.
Hoping to treat the world by making everyone enlightened is even worse....it can't be shoveled down your throat and in attempting so you make more harm than good. The road to hell is paved by the good intentions.
