In this tutorial I am installing a Child theme from the parent theme Thematic.

A child theme has just a few files as it takes most of what is needs from the parent theme. The few files are those that need to be adjusted. For instance the layout style.css, a few template pages, and the function page.

One creates a child theme since the parent theme will on occasion be updated by the person who created it. The child theme files will not be touched by any updates made to the parent theme.

It is a good practice using child themes.

thank you, keep it up! what is the text editor you are using on your mac? because i'm using your basic TextEdit and it doesn't color code comments and such.

Great timing! I was doing some catchup work and noticed your comment which got me thinking about the other tutorials I created in this serious of modifying Thematic Theme which have been sitting in a folder just waiting for me to upload them.

The text editor I am using is Smultron. I purchased it from the app store.
