  • @kittyminty Neither are made up both existed at that time already for a few hundred years.

There is a Belgian culture which outs itself in strong regionalism which makes it vulnerable for incorrect statements like your own, so the people tend to forget about the neighbours and how similar they actually are.

I have relations in both parts of Belgium and did my research, so I actually do know what I'm talking about.

  • @GulleGelderlander But bear in mind that the Flemish culture shares much much more with the Wallonian culture the with the Dutch one, so much actually that the main difference is linguistic.

Apart from that no foreign power had much to do with the Belgian revolt, the French send a few 1000 men in aid when it was necessary to be able to take Belgium over later. But the British didn't want to see that and forced France to let that plan down and the Centrals were busy in Poland

  • @gerretl After they were seperated for a long time the Southern Dutch changed. The Northern Dutch were protestant, the southern were catholic. But the Southern-Netherlands now had a large population of francophones as well. Under pressure from France the Netherlands gave Belgium their independence and they got a German prince as King. Dutch Belgium (Flanders) still shares a lot cultural aspects with the Netherlands. The dancers wear clothing similar to traditional Dutch clothing.

  • @gerretl No. Belgium was originaly a part of the Spanish Netherlands. Though the Dutch provinces went in revolt against the Spanish. 80years of warfare followed but only the Northern Netherlands gained independence (modern Netherlands). Souther-Netherlands (Belgium) remained Spanish, but became later the Austrian Netherlands until it was conquered by France. After Napoleon got beaten they returned it to the Netherlands, but Belgium started a revolt against the Dutch.

  • does anybody have an idea about the song's name ? Thank You!

  • Depends if you want a raging hangover, and a divorce.

  • dude take that back! :D stella artois is made in my hometown it's the best beer there is!

  • maybe the political country and his borders are made up (but aren't all country's made up stuff from the political figures above?)

But the people in it are still real, and there is a distinctive flemish culture anyways... with the beer and mostly immaterial stuff.

To say it with other words: I didn't think/knew that the flemish people also use to wear this kind of cloths and shoes.

    better?

  • Erm, wasn't Belgium a made up country to stop the French, Dutch, Russians, English and Prussians stop fighting.

Leopold 1 used it as a platform to control the Congo, and it all kicked off again in 1914.

Still the beers great (Leffe, not that wife beater stuff S***** A***** )

  • oh... didn't knew they use to wear this kind of shoes in belgium too... thought it was something only from the netherlands...hmm...

And to think that I'm belgian myself...
