CHAPTER 26
*Back earlier that day... Gabrielle's name is called through the microphone and she walks up to receive her freshman diploma. She looks into the crowd and tries to find Nick's face, to make sure he was still there. She squints into the audience as she walks up the row, but immediately realizes she doesn't have to look very hard as she sees Nick, standing on a chair so as to see over the masses of people, smiling at her. She smiles back and hurries to the podium.*
*Twenty minutes later, everyone's name has been called and the grade has processed back up the aisle. They have just been released and Gabrielle stands on her tippy toes, trying to find Nick. All of a sudden, she hears a voice behind her.*
???: Congratulations, sophomore!
GABRIELLE: *Turning to face him and smiling.* Thanks Nick! *She hugs him.* I saw you in the back, standing on a chair. Very smart.
NICK: I know, it was one of my more ingenious ideas. I must be brilliant.
GABRIELLE: *Giggling.* Don't push it, Mr. "Smith".
NICK: *Laughing too.* Come on, aren't your parents here? You should probably meet up with them.
GABRIELLE: Yeah, I see them over there... *She motions to their left.*
*Gabrielle grabs his hand and pulls him over to a group of adults. Gabrielle, still dragging Nick by the hand behind her, snakes her way through the crowd and taps a short brunette woman on the shoulder. When she turns around, Nick realizes from the obvious resemblance, that this must be Gabrielle's mom.*
MRS. MACINTYRE: *Hugging her daughter.* Hi honey, congratulations!
GABRIELLE: Thanks, mom! *Sees her mom looking at Nick.* Oh, ma, this is Nick J...Smith. (AN: She doesn't want to lie to her mom, but she cant risk anyone hearing that he is actually Nick Jonas.)
MRS. MACINTYRE: Um... hello Nick, are you in Gabrielle's grade?
NICK: *Uncomfortably.* No, I'm... a friend.
GABRIELLE: He doesn't go here. He just came to watch me graduate. *Smiles at Nick.*
NICK: Uh huh.
MRS. MACINTYRE: *Looking at his sunglasses, hat pulled low over his forehead, baggy jeans, and dark sweatshirt disapprovingly.* Mmhmm, I see.
*Before she can say anything about Nick's dirt-bagg-ish appearance, Nick's phone goes off.*
NICK: *Checking his phone.* Hey, Gabs, I've gotta go, my mom needs me to take care of Frank the Tank.
GABRIELLE: Oh Frankie's at your house?
NICK: Yeah, my parents' plane must have just gotten in, I know Joe was supposed to meet them at the airport sometime today.
GABRIELLE: Okay, say hi to them for me!
NICK: 'Course. See you later, Gabs. *He grabs her hand, pulls her in for a quick hug, then takes off.*
