When the elevator shaft opened its doors, it revealed a marvelous hallway with dim lights and parquet flooring. I could see a chandelier hanging from the ceiling in the other room, with a grand staircase leading to the remaining part of the penthouse. I gulped, stepping into the grand room with my boots and looked up. "Hello?" I called out.
I heard scurrying, and I turned to see a stout, plump woman with pulled back brown hair and a rag in her hand. It must be Greta, I assumed quietly to myself.
"You must be Nick!" Greta squealed in her blissful French accent. "Come with me, monsieur. Selena is upstairs, you can go too."
Hesitantly, I walked further deep into the house. I walked underneath the chandelier, stopping in my tracks to observe the place. On my left was the large kitchen. On my right was a living room with a fireplace. It looked larger, but I didn't have time to investigate the whole house. I began walking up the flights up stairs until I entered a pastel pink-colored bedroom.
It wasn't an ordinary bedroom. This was massive, and took up the entire perimeter of the bottom portion of the house and looked beautiful, like a work of art. The floors were parquet, like the rest of the home. The walls were pastel pink, fair and delicate. There were paintings of two girls--one was Selena and one was most likely her cousin--and a gigantic plasma flat screen attached to the wall. There was a divider in the middle of the half of the room and I was guessing that was her sister's room.
"Nick, is that you?" a voice called in a far distance.
I snapped back to reality and looked up. "Y-yeah, it's me . . ."
I heard the pitter-patter of feet against the floor. Soon enough, Selena emerged from the door of the divider wearing black pant-leggings with red leather flats and a plain white, oversized shirt that fell off one shoulder. Her hair was straight and pulled up into a messy ponytail, covered with a fedora hat. When she walked up to me, she looked much shorter; I guess it was the shoes.
I was taken by surprise when she wrapped her arms around me. "It's good to see you, Nick," she said, pulling back. She looked down at her outfit and sighed in frustration. "I hope this isn't too much, I mean . . . I was looking through my 'comfortable clothes' and most of them were in the wash. I'm sorry."
I widened my eyes slightly and replied, "This is perfect, Selena. Y-you . . . you look beautiful."
Her cheeks turned slightly red and she grinned lopsidedly. "Well, thanks . . . You don't look so bad yourself." She nudged me gently, giggling as she grabbed her messenger bag that fell across her chest. "You ready to go?"
I nodded, looking around the room once more. "Yeah, if you are."
"Great!" she giggled. Then, she grabbed my hand and interlocked her fingers with mine. Her hand felt warm and soothing in mine, gentle and fragile in contrast to my firm one. I loosened my grip on my tension and held tight to her hand as she skipped down the stairs. "Greta, I'll be out with Nick. Tell Leighton I'll be back . . . whenever."
She didn't wait for a response; she clicked the button to the elevator shaft and looked up at me. "I'm glad I agreed to come."
"We haven't even gone anywhere," I chuckled, stepping into the shaft once it opened.
She laughed, leaning into my shoulder playfully. "I know, but you're a nice person. I trust you, Nick. And, honestly, I was quite upset you didn't call me sooner."
I scrunched my nose up in confusion. "How come?"
Selena stroked my hand with the pad of her thumb, looking at our feet. "Well, when we went to Emmanuel's Bistro the other day, I had a great time and . . . and I thought you did too, so I kinda expected you to call the next day. But . . . but mostly because I missed hearing your voice."
I slowly released her hand, scratching the back of my head gently. I gulped hard, as if feeling my throat coil around itself. "O-oh."
"You didn't feel the same way, did you?" Selena whispered. Her voice almost sounded sad; it scared me half to death.
"Of course I felt the same," I whispered. "I couldn't get you off my mind, Selena. It was driving me crazy. So . . . so I-I I had to ask you to come out tonight with me." I closed my eyes, waiting for a reaction. Instead, I heard her giggle.
"I was thinking about you, too, Nick."
and the cutest couple couple award goes to (drum roll) . . . NELENA ;)
