THE UGLY DUCKLINGS - "CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK"- 1968

In Sept. of 1967 Mike McKenna joined The "DUCKS" on lead guitar. On this track he shows off some of his licks from his tenure with "LUKE & THE APOSTLES". He had played the tune for 3 or 4 years at this point. We had to shorten the arrangement for TV, as it was usually a real Rave-Up lasting 10 - 12 minutes!

Is it true that Mike switched his high e-string to a banjo string to bend it easier?

@DannyDelReyo - Absolutely! I think that Robbie Robertson started that whole thing by setting up his his Telecaster the same way. Roger Mayne & all the other guitarists in the "Village" followed suit. It wasn't long before the String Manufacturers caught on and started making lighter gauge strings.

@Nothin66 Amazing! I just thought that it was a rumor, i wonder if he still does that today. Is it just the high e-string you switch or?

@DannyDelReyo - Don't know for sure. I think once you do the high E you can use the other strings in a set to give you a lighter feel. By doing that you ended up with a G string that wasn't wound. (much better for bending!).
