In the city of Sopron, in Hungary (next to the border with Austria) there are monuments to remember what happened 20 years ago, in 1989 - the Pan-European Picnic in which people broke through the fence that separated both countries. They say it is important to remember because it was a "civil movement" and it was people to made a move to "change their lives".

  • The Iron Curtain first fell in Poland on June 04, 1989 with the first partially free elections whereby the communists were unanimously voted out of office. The first non-communist Prime Minister in the Soviet bloc, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, was overwhelmingly elected. These events brought on the revolutions in Hungary, Czechoslovakia (Vaclav Havel/Velvet Revolution), the fall of the Berlin Wall and finally the execution of Ceaucescu in Romania on December 25, 1989.
