While during the Spanish era Filipinos were portrayed as some sort of sophisticated and refined Oriental counterparts of their European brothers, the American eye had a totally different approach. They brought to America a queer catalog of primitive tribes precautiously showing themselves as they were wanted to be seen. Most family pictures belong to the Spanish times. All pictures of "ethnic" women are part of the American officer Tiffany Bernard Williams ' collection as kept at the University of Michigan, he being featured in several of them [ http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/i/image/image-idx?rgn1=;c=sclphilimg;type=boole... ] . Shockingly, , those pictures taken more than a hundred years ago can be even more so to their American compatriots of the XXI century. So much for the Philippines and its people!
Music : Mazurca taaleña, sung by Guillermo Gómez-Rivera, included in his album Nostalgia Filipina II, accompanied by the rondalla of Roberto Buena.
LYRICS
Sácate veloz del tampipí
el sayal de jusi y sinamay,
póntelo y péinate,
lúcelo y ríete.
Vístete así y prepárate
a bailar el chotis clásico,
que me robas tú
el corazón al vestirte así.

Dame un besito
y un paso por acá,
que sí.
Dame un besito
y un paso por allá.

Esas tus mangas crisálidas
con aletear de arcángeles
te dan muy pálidas
la inmácula prez del amor.
Y el sayal de cola y caracol
que volante vuela, viene y va
es lo que nos enhebró
el corazón con ritmo de chotis.

  • This is a musical score for Chotis Taalena of Bayanihan Dance Company. Now I knew that originally this is a mazurka and not chotis
