A project demonstrating the use of imagery in encoding new information into long-term memory. I used Japanese animal characters as the exemplum. The characters were made to look like the animals they represent. Encoding the characters using imagery makes it easier for the mind to recall characters and use them when needed. Because Japanese characters are pictographic by nature, using imagery to encode their meanings is a highly effective way to learn them. (This is how I learned the majority of the Japanese Kanji I know- at least the nouns.) The project illustrates one facet of Cognitive Information Processing theory (CIP).
