I'd like to know about the attack helicopters that were sent in with commandos that were sent in to finish the crew and sink the ship,but a emergency message was sent out possibly by one of the carriers that help was on way so helicopters took off....that was said by another survior on a different broadcast of USS Liberty by name of Phil Turney.....would be interesting to have heard again....and Phil said nobody came for them for 18hrs after attack,maybe hopping they would sink.

It was a mistake, not Israeli- but AMERICAN mistake. American officials had told Israelis that this ship was located in the "far east" only a few days before the 1967 broke out. It was an intelligence ship, and the US didn't want others to know its position...in retrospect, this was a deadly mistake of the USA, that costed the lives of many Americans. Israel had no idea /knowledge that this could be an American ship, and was in the middle of a brutal war with 4 Arab-Muslim countries at the time.
