Diversity is the hallmark of India. The peoples that now make up the Indian nation have brought together the inspiration of many cultures, and the Indian terrain, from tropical rainforest to sandy deserts and eternal Himalayan of artistic traditions and natural materials has evolved a dynamic art and craft culture, which, trough its vibrancy, investiveness, and often superlative workmanship, has for over a thousand years enthralled all who have encountered it.
No element of a culture can exist in isolation. Each artistic expression is part of a composite whole. The aesthetics of architecture, craft, music and dance flow into each other and are echoed in the dress of the people of that culture. A study of costume then provides an index to the social, cultural, political, historical and economic aspects that shape people and its ethos. Every community and tribe in Rajasthan has its own distinctive costume. The models, which have been fashioned over time, have an integral logic, influenced by geography, climate and socio-cultural factors.
Today, as change sweeps over the face of the subontinent, no section of Indian society has remained unaffected and traditional costume is in a state of transition. A documentation of the dressing habits of the many social and ethnic groups was therefore thought to be of importance - as also a record of the changes that have been taking place over a period of time. Such a study makes accessible not only the skills and techniques developed over generations but also the meaning and symbolism of the garments, their colour and form. It also reveals the changesthat have affected society over a period of time.
