This Spirochete bacterium is from a salt pond in the Heron's Head Park Salt Marsh, San Francisco Bay. It was shot with a Swift FM-31 Field Microscope at 800X and a Sony DSC-W7 Cybershot Camera. The jittery movement may appear odd, but this little guy normally lives in the viscous water/mud interface underneath a thick mat of Cyaobacteria. Spirochetes have internal flagella, anchored at intervals along the filament. These flagella spin, creating the jittery movement.
A diatom.
