do you have any suggestions for an aging beginner with arthritis? I'm having a hard time with first position (f#) on the e string - never mind the low 1 (F). Is there a work-around for swollen knuckles (other than sliding hand back)?

For sure, the 1/2 steps would be WAY to large. Several things are different with viola... for both hands.
