Goodwill is built on the amazing power of work to transform lives. For James, a man whos been blind all of his life, work allows him to see himself and life differently. With a job, I feel normal, he explains. I dont feel handicapped, and Im not seen as handicapped when I work.
At Goodwill, he saw something else a place where he could work without the fear of discrimination. Ive always known about Goodwill, James says. But I didnt know they would hire me. Ive experienced discrimination. Ive seen it. Ive watched it. But at Goodwill, things are different.
James hangs clothes at Goodwill, but says the job gives him far more than it might appear. Goodwill gives him more than just the means to help himself; it gives him the ability to help others.
If somebody needs groceries, I can do it, he says confidently. Goodwill allows me to help others. If you have work, you have self-respect and dignity. If you have no self-respect and dignity, you have nothing. I have everything a job, friends and trust.
I have a key to my mothers house today. She sees me differently now. Its more than a key. I have her trust and respect.
