Babe emulated Joe Jackson's batting style for sure. He talked about it once in his later years.
Here's a quote from Babe in one of my books: "I copied Jackson's batting style because I thought he was the greatest hitter i'd ever seen. I still think the same."

@BoyJewish Don't disgrace yourself or judaism by throwing religion into a sports chat. Sandy Koufax was simply -GREAT-period.

@yroe12 First of all, Glavine pitched in a different era when the high strikes were called more often than they are now. Second, when you watch the game from home, you're viewing it from CF which is a good few dozen feet away from the plate. Also, the pitches go 80-90+ mph during a game. Pretty hard to judge from such a distance and with such a small time window. Did you ever consider that they perhaps had good catchers who framed their pitches well so they could get away with some pitches?

@Middler124 Does one really need more proof than watching it happen over and over? I mean, I didn't nab any Tom Glavine hair samples if that's what you mean? I didn't secretly capture Greg Maddux admitting it on tape recorder. I didn't know I was on CSI at the time, my bad.

I don't think anyone can answer the question concerning "were these guys as good as today's players?". Same DNA, same talent levels but different environments. For instance, if Joe Mauer were born in 1890, he would have grown up with the same nutrition, same batting techniques/equipment , etc .. as Ruth or Cobb. He would most likely have been about 5'11", having been birthed by a smaller generation of parents. My guess is that ability then is the same as as it is now.
could that swing make it today?

@BSlash24 I think part of the reason that old-timers had such big hitches in their swing is because the bats were so much heavier.
