"The most terrifying character since the Cagney of 'Public Enemy.'" So perfect. This launched Bogart quite similarly to the way "The Public Enemy" launched Cagney. Of course Bogart was originally cast in the play because of his resemblance to Dillinger.
Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda, and Lauren Bacall did a live version of this play on television around 1954 or so. I've seen it, it's at the Paley Center for Media in New York City and Los Angeles.
One of the ten best films of all time. Perfect. Davis is a wonder to watch. The writing is so tight there is not an extra word, nor one missing. I saw this on the big screen at the Biograph theatre in Chicago in 1975, I sat there stunned.
