Dover Wilson considered Prospero "a terrible old man, almost as tyrannical and irascible as Lear at the opening of the play". Miranda notices her father's sweeping anger welling up very strongly in this scene: "never till this day/Saw I him touch'd with anger so distemper'd". The tempations of vengance and revenge are always so strong ("th' fire i' th' blood"), especially with thoughts on it eating away through long banishment and possession of ability to act- the kind of vengance that has ruined and wracked kingdoms asunder.

Kingdoms of an isle, which can also be oneself, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you" (in your midst). Prospero overcomes these temptations with imagination and fatherly love, and from his wilderness he does end with forgiveness and humility in this delicate and deeply Christian play. Spirits, goblins, sudden solemn music, and mosters of earth are what enables us to penetrate our reality out and within so well.

Michael Hordern ... Prospero
Christopher Guard ... Ferdinand
David Dixon ... Ariel
Gwyneth Lloyd ... Juno
Elizabeth Gardner ... Ceres
Judith Rees ... Iris

  • lol miranda doesnt look 15 xP

  • These are all actors as i foretold you, these are spirits, and are metled into air, into thin air...and like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the great globe itself!! ye' all which it inherit, shall dissolve. Like this insubstantial pageant faded leave not a rack behind!! ...We are such stuff as dreams are made on' and our little life is rounded with a sleep..." most meaningful line in the play.

  • Am I correct that you do not have all the parts? Or am I not seeing them? Thanks for this much but was sort of hoping to see the whole play. I'll keep looking...

  • True to life... And yet not... It is what it is, is it not?

  • lol why does Ferdinand look like a bum?

  • please send me the download link of the tempest

    thanks

  • We are doing this at school -3 hahaha it is epic...

Who else knows what edge means... ;) I doooooooo :D

  • Brilliant Prospero, but terrible Ariel.

  • It is sad that the lesser known plays of Shakespeare, like this one receive so little attention; I guess this is how most of the plays of Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles were lost through malignant time; and it is strange indeed: By quality the lesser known romances, which stand somewhat between comedy and tragedy in the Shakespearean way are equal to the well known ones; this play is in nothing worse than A Midsummer Night’s Dream than its fame! So perform them more often else they are lost!

  • OMG! I WAS MIRANDA! It was so fun, plus the guy who played Ferdinand was really cute! "May i but once a day behold this maid!" :)

  • they can sing dayyyyum

  • i remember watching this in school and when Ariel said 'do you love me, master?' everyone laughed. good play though, I always thought this version was odd though
