The announcer was part right Newport's drill team IS Called Knight Crusaders, They have always been called that but in the last 15 years no one calls them by their correct name Knight Crusaders. Newport's first drill team was formed in the 1967-68 school year. Newport's former pep club was called Excalibur the last year for the club was in 1972, Newport's mascot the Knights was chosen on October 14th, 1964
Wow, I love the poms! They look like the poms that my dance/drill team uses. Big, heavy and fluttery. It takes a great deal of skill to choreograph a routine with this many girls and the poms. Good job girls!
Actually, let me correct that. It looks like all of their marching consisted with 90's...and that's really impressive. They should be the inspiration and model for perfect marching (both form and longitivity!).
I was on the Sammamish team 04-05 and was so sad they cut out poms! But seriously, props to them....heavy poms AND a 6 min routine. The drill girls of today don't know how good they have it! I am also super impressed that they went with 90's to march off...you're tired as it is after a routine, and to march off with perfect 90's!!
Newport didn't change the school's mascot it has always been the Knights,Newport's drill team has always been called the knight crusaders from the very beginning, Newport first drill started in the 1967-68 school year
I remember watching these old school videos when I was on the team in 01-03 we used some of it as inspiration and mixed it with modern techniques...I can't believe how long the routines were! Our team used those poms for the last in 2002 and then they were gone :(...wow We still used the BOOM at the end too in 01ish...ahh memories
To march with that kind of precision and with that large of a team, they had to take it slow. Now teams rush through their routines; precision suffers because of choreographers who were unequipped to adapt the style to new time constraints, and while displays of flexibility and balance seem a more economical use of floor time they really lack the sense of awe & majesty like what you get from this. Back then drill teams were a phenomenon... Now they're just 'not-cheerleaders.' There I said it.

those poms aren't light either! 90 degree marching, heavy poms, and a 6 minutes routine... they were amazing :)
