Apparently I should have been trying the top-to-bottom approach. I was starting at the bottom and my impatience was getting the best of me, but you make it look so easy since all the new stars are landing in the master positions so that the old stars that fall out of place are readily movable through the grid to a better spot...

one of the best video of hexic.
it's funny watching the MMC the mouse traps and the other fantastic combos, but this is the best tutorial ever.
