  • why is it that nobody remembers that 203 squadron ( the oldest squadron in the RAF ) also flew NIMROD and protected the near east theatre? YOU MISSED MY SQUADRON 'S BADGE

  • Sorry arararax. I didn't know about 203. I only got to Kinloss in 78 so I missed that.. I presume all the Nimrods from Luqa ended up there in 77? How many were there?

  • great video. would anybody mind telling the song after the first. no rush

  • 633 Sqn - see note from Robsta1974 below :)

Unfortunately Elgar didn't write a long enough piece. I thought the opening bars matching the rumble down the runway quite well. The rest of the music matches the beauty and terror of a majestic war machine.

It's Nimrod, one of the Enigma Variations by Elgar

  • Thanks for a great tribute to a brilliant aircraft. I was at Kinloss from 1978 to 1983 and managed a couple of 8 hour trips. Magic! Sorry to see the last flight of the MR2. The Nimrod is up there with Vulcan and Victor - all iconic designs in their own way.

  • Thanks for a great video, very evocative of the classic lines and power of the 'mighty hunter'. Sorry to see the last flight of the MR2. I was at Kinloss from 1978 to 83 and managed to wangle flights on a couple of the Tapestry patrol trips of about 8 hours each. Magic! Nimrod shares my affections along with the Vulcan and Victor, all iconic designs.

  • @stfergus608 cannot vouch for when the civilian side took over us doing majors in 1996 but flying in any aircraft is not generally safe, we were not desinged to fly if that was the case god would have gave us wings. Problem is with Nimrod the stigma is now attatched of XV230. Thankfully now nobody can touch the remaining a/c now. They served well to the country more than anyone will really know, until i write my book when i leave the military

  • I'm a huge fan of the Nimrod because I grew up seeing Nimrod MR2s every day during the '80s and early '90s when they were based at RAF St Mawgan. Still fondly remember how the teachers at school used to have to stop talking in class for about half a minute as a Nimrod would rumble over on the approach to St Mawgan. I doubt the MRA4 will have quite the same effect!

It was a sad day when they all left for Kinloss in the early '90s and a sad day when the MR2s were withdrawn from service last week.

  • finest airframe ever built ? the nimrod aint no safe plane dude many people say the plane was un air worthy the day it rolled of the production line

  • Despite recent bad press, the Nimrod will always remain my favourite kite.

Many memories of St. Mawgan, watching SAR scramble in treacherous weather at night with blinding horizontal rain and gale force winds.

The day one just made it back to base when on fire, an amazing sight to behold XV2?? ( sorry the number escapes me at present). As for the real payload of the kite, well, what fun we all had with those" white ones". Great memories, great lads. Thanks for putting this on.

  • Wow, great video! 'the mighty hunter' very suitable title! when the Nimrod Mra4's are retired in 2040, it will be the end 91 years of Comet/Nimrod flying!!
