Social networking sites are part of the real world... as real as pancakes. The new thing in them is, they use new modes of communication. This is to extend our communication capabilities, not to replace them.
If one doesn't enjoy or gain from the new modes of communication, it's logical to drop them. I understand your point.

Social networking sites are rubbish. They don't offer anything that you can't already do in the real world.
They are really just there so that people can lie and have their lies somewhat legitimised. You won't see many people saying "im stupid, ugly, ignorant, arrogant" etc on those sites for example.
Most will be gone in less than 5 years when everyone suddenly realises their government has piped down all their "private" details.
