Premiered at the Studio Theatre, Toronto, 1996. Filmed for television in 2002 at the Betty Oliphant Theatre, Toronto.
An excerpt from Arabesque Dance Co.'s performance "Descent of Ishtar", choreographed by Yasmina Ramzy.
DESCENT OF ISHTAR (Dance of the Seven Veils) - The music for Descent of Ishtar was created by award winning composer Richard Feren especially for Arabesque Dance Company.
Performed with Middle Eastern dance movement in a Modern dance format, Descent of Ishtar tells the story of the Goddess searching for an answer as to why beings experience suffering and have to die. In order to reach the Lord of Death to ask this question, she must pass through seven gates, at each point relinquishing a veil of ignorance. Only when she is completely naked, can she then see clearly the answer in the mirror presented to her by the Lord of Death.
Receiving rave reviews, this 45 minute long choreography has been staged over 22 times, always to sold-out audiences. See why, since its first performance in 1996, many have returned to see this performance again and again.

Beautiful choreo! I really don't like the skirts, they seem to be unflattering to all of those beautiful figures.
