Paul Whiteman with Bix: Lonely Melody

Here is "Lonely Melody" (Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra, with Bix Beiderbecke, cornet; Victor 21214; recorded 1/4/28), as played back on my Victor VE8-30X with tooled leather panels (phonograph dating to 1927). It has a brass Orthophonic soundbox.

Looks like a Brass reproducer on that beautiful machine.Sounds Great.Did you ever try to rebuild the reproducer?It's a lot of fun trying to line up the little ball bearings.

I'm very happy I could share this tune (and phonograph) with others. It *is* a very rare machine, by the way. Apparently there are no surviving production numbers, but Bob Baumbach (of "Look For the Dog" fame) estimates that there were probably about 500 tooled leather panel Credenzas (8-30s) made. The finest I've seen is in the Eldridge Johnson Victrola Museum in Dover, Delaware.

You just can't beat an Orthophonic player like this for sound, at least with the Victors. That's a beautiful machine, and it's nice to hear one of my favorite Bix records on it.

I'd love to be able to find an Orthophonic Credenza. There is a nearby phonograph collector here where I live in S/E Wisconsin who has the exact same machine as yours. Gary

Love the old music - classic, brilliant and timeless. Paul, Bix and so many others who we are lucky enough to still have their music with us. Wish I had saved my Grandmothers credenza type radio from 1923 and all her antiques....

Hi. I just wanted to mention, that the speed is a little slow. I compared it with the Garrard 301, and the compact disc. The Victrola is superb. A very exspensive model.

Hi -- Thanks for posting this! I remember playing this 78 a lot when I was a kid, haven't heard it in probably 30 years until tonight when I asked PandoraRadio to do Paul Whiteman for me, and it came up in the playlist. Delighted, because strangely enough just last week this melody -- and this particular recording of it, riffs intact -- got stuck in my head outta nowhere and I spent some time searching for it -- misremembering its name, tho. What's the flip side of this Victor? It's good, too.
