Katzs deli has earned its fame and fabulous reputation for fine pastrami, salt-beef and hot-dogs. This huge room packed night and day hums with an eclectic crowd.

When I moved to NY in the late '70s, this area was so bad my punk rock singer boyfriend who wanted to take me there was trembling with fear. I can't get good deli in Paris, France, and never had good mustard in NYC, where I get it here no prob. I also can't get a really good pickle in France. Paris deli sucks. If you want tepid potatoes with herring, go for it. I'd rather have a tongue sandwich on rye and a Cel-Ray soda anyday.

Due to the sickening invasion of yuppies, places like this will soon be a memory. Oh well, I'm sure Starbucks can offer just as much cultural value and neighbourhood spirit.
