Pay attention to skill sets NOT these factors as a primary source of evaluations...

1. wins and losses

2. conference they played in, talent around them, talent they played against or schedule.

3. type of offensive system they ran

4. stats

These areas need further context and can not stand alone without film to support any negative or positive extrapolation.

..................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My evaluation process is 2 part...

1. does a quarterback throw with anticipation with accuracy.

2. Do they have dynamic pocket command ... as defined by... the following

A. Able to maintain eye level down field regardless of what is happening (feel the rush not look at the rush). Can a passer slide in the pocket and climb the pocket while NOT looking at the rush at all.

B. Can a passer maintain his passing profile (ready to throw it and remain on balance) and if extending the play by moving can they reload (get back on balance)

C. Does a passers level of play drop off significantly when they are pressured? Or can a passer maintain a high level of play vs pressure.

This looks good but i watched his games against kansas state and tcu and i don't think he completed a pass of more than twelve yards before the yards after catch. His only touchdown pass in the game against kansas state was basically a handoff to Tavon Austin. He rarely even attempted a deep pass. In the game against kansas state he threw a ton of screen passes and none of them worked.

That isn't a measurement of skill set. That is more specific too system that it is "lack of ability". This wasn't a play action system. They didn't have a running game. Screens where their running game. So though a coach asks him to run a screen play. That doesn't reflect what he "can't do", it is simply their system. Just like any other system.

Some try to tie a point to Smith throwing a lot of screens with a lack of ability to throw down field. This has more to do with playing in........

..... more known passing situations in high score games.More disadvantaged down and distances because of the score board and because of a lack of a running game. All this means is if you put Smith in a different situation in a different scheme you will have a different set of results because of skill set.... WVU was 2 and 6 vs teams that scored 38 points a game while tossing 5 picks. By comparison Andrew Luck was 2 and 4 in his entire career at Stanford in those same situations with 7 picks.

I'm actually Anti Geno. I call him a 3rd Rounder (Matt Barkley as well) and Over Rated. I do say he's got the POTENTIAL if he can sit and develop on a Good Offense to be Amazing... but that out the gate he will struggle.

Never beat Syracuse... that's a Leadership thing there. 14 against Syracuse, Texas Tech and Kansas State... good Defenses vanish Geno.

LSU and his 400 Yards? 4 Turnovers (2 INT, 2 Fumbles Lost).

Beat Texas? 5-4 in Big XII Texas. Still, great Video and work!

31% of his passes BEHIND the LOS as a Senior, 70% of his Passes from 9 Yards and In as well. Those "Big Throws" I saw, were Wide Open guys... I don't see him hitting Windows... more like he's hitting Garage Doors.

Just saying some things I'd love to see him do better... and thank you for showing Good and Bad Geno as well.

When you look at the type of throws for example Gabbert, Ponder, and Locker made in college. They didn't display the same type of play making ability.

3rd round grade is your opinion... a opinion that is far and few between. I think Geno Smith is underrated. Time will tell who is closer to having a feel for this prospect.

Never beat Syracuse, and that is a leadership issue? Guess you would have never drafted Peyton Manning since he was 0-4 vs Florida. Or Andrew Luck who was 0-3 vs Oregan.

As much as people repeat "look at him vs K State". Yet didn't have 2 consecutive incomplete passes. Didn't have a turnover till down four scores (which is typical of any QB down multiple possessions)

And lets forget that K State Scored on their first 6 drives.

Or that WVU gave up 38.1 points a game.

highlighting how many throws he had behind the LOS doesn't identify ability or isolated skill sets. A scheme a player runs in college isn't testimony to their ability. You have to look past that and look at the things that they are able to do. And there are a lot of unique abilities that translate. The ability to throw down field and in the red zone translate.

Just like I didn't look at Cam Newton and judge him on his scheme form college. I looked at what he could do. Not his college scheme.

..... Luck had little success. Which isn't specific to him. It is simply how football works when teams score vs your defense.

Just ask Drew Brees, who just came off of the best regular season in the history of the sport. He didn't all of a sudden forget how to play football one year later. Game situations changed..... which is what this video is highlighting >> emphasis on skill sets not >> stats >> wins or losses >> schedule / talent on his team or opponents. Just skill sets (ability)

In games in 2012 when WVU gave up 38 points or more. They where 2 and 6 and Geno Smith threw 5 picks.

By comparison, Andrew Luck in his entire career at Stanford experienced these game situations 6 times. Where teams scored 38 points or more, he only won 2 of those games and threw 7 picks.

The point is, this is how football works. If your team gives up 6 scoring drives to start the game it impacts game situations. It puts you in more known passing situations. And in those same situations......
