David Watkins http://www.davidwatkins.info is one of those musicians who is infectiously enthusiastic about his instrument. Here he is telling us about the role of the hand, wrist and forearm in playing chords on the harp. Of course automatic volume control on the camera microphone makes the differences hard to hear . . . so you really need to come to a masterclass in real life!
David used here the opening solo in Renié's Harp Concerto in C Minor - he has not played it in 40 years but it was the piece that immediately came to mind for demonstrating the approach to different chords.
It is such a privilege to find oneself being shown inside secrets of musicianship and often in arranging concerts at Hammerwood Park http://www.hammerwood.mistral.co.uk/concerts.htm I find a musician who ought to be interviewed by Radio 3 In Tune programme . . . and wish that I had my camera or recorder. This time, whilst setting up for the concert after lunch, the camera was here . . .
So perhaps, if you hear that David is doing a masterclass . . . it's worth moving heaven and earth to come and hear him.
His hands are like lightning!
He must have a very happy wife.
